{alltv} On the Net: PBS releases its programming online

NEW YORK – PBS may be cooler than you think.

Though long-form video on the Web has become all the rage in the last year or two thanks to sites like Hulu.com, PBS has been hosting full episodes online for years.

On Wednesday, the Public Broadcasting Service staked its Internet claim by launching a new video portal at http://www.pbs.org/video. PBS says that by the summer, it will eventually host thousands of hours of programming.

The portal brings together programming that previously had been scattered across numerous Web sites. The site gathers full-length episodes of shows that many would say are among the best on television, including "American Experience," "Frontline," "American Masters," "Nature" and "Masterpiece" (formerly known as "Masterpiece Theater").

PBS already has a channel on Hulu, a joint venture of News Corp. and General Electric's NBC Universal, and it posts shorter clips on YouTube. But the new player, which will eventually include material from its 357 affiliates, offers an online destination for PBS viewers.

PBS says it's finding younger viewers online.

"It's a new audience for us," said Jason Seiken, senior vice president of interactive at PBS. "It's not our television audience watching things online. It's a new and younger and more diverse audience."

The portal is a component of a larger online strategy for the network. Last fall, it launched a video player for children's programming: http://www.pbskidsgo.org/video. PBS is also premiering the first episode of a new archaeological show, "Time Team America," on the Web site before its broadcast premiere this summer.

PBS hopes the new player will help tie together its large, disparate network of public broadcasters, and it expects the player will boost viewers to local affiliate programs. The player can also be embedded, so affiliates can host national programming on their sites.

Oregon Public Broadcasting President and CEO Steve Bass said in a statement that the new PBS.org "expands our mission in a way we could not do otherwise."

Though most other networks have stopped short of putting all of their programming and library online, PBS says its mission is different as a broadcaster meant to serve the public. Depending on appetite and rights issues, some programs will have their entire back catalog added — such as Julia Child's cooking shows.

In the network's ongoing efforts to shed an old and stodgy image, PBS — which turns 40 this year — is also present in social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The network is also planning to open up PBS.org to user-generated content and online festivals, Seiken said.

"We're going to shock a lot of people when they come and look at this video portal," said Seiken. "We're not your grandfather's PBS."

{alltv} Dancing Hodgepodge Begets High Scores

With only seven contestants left, dances were pulled out of the hat more randomly than ever.

From Argentine tango and waltz to samba and cha-cha, the remaining celebs continued to Hough and puff and hoof it out in preparation for their longest individual routines yet and the first group dance—a tribute to the swingin' '60s—of the season.

And what a hoot that group dance was, with each contestant having to come up with a signature move (look out for Ty Murray's "Groovy Rider") and then suiting up in their Austin Powers finest for some high-stepping go-go action. Surprisingly, no one was dropped on his or her head, and Derek Hough stole the show. (He does that sometimes.)

But first, Monday's show kicked off with the only set of sanctioned lifts we were to see tonight...

Melissa Rycroft: Red lips and a smoky eye do not a sultry performance make on their own—but they go a long way toward setting the scene. Any spice missing from her rumba last week showed up in the Argentine tango tonight. Melissa's footwork was so spot on and her lines so exquisite, Tony Dovolani was the one who ended up looking like the less seasoned tango dancer. But kudos to his kick-ass choreography, just the same. "I dub you both king and queen of illegal lifts!" exclaimed Carrie Ann Inaba.
Score: 29

Lawrence Taylor: It was Edyta Sliwinska who got tangled up in blue during their Viennese waltz, her face at one point obscured by one of her gown's flowing pieces, and she ended up missing a hold by half a second. Otherwise, there were quite a few nice moments, but we feel that L.T. may have peaked as a dancer. "You definitely got the romance right," Bruno Tonioli began before pointing out the myriad technical flaws, while Len Goodman told the NFL Hall of Famer he was "shocked" at how well he did.
Score: 21
. Nowhere to go but nowhere really.

Lil' Kim: Derek Hough is one hell of a choreographer. Their rumba didn't always flow, but every few seconds there was another impressive hold to ooh and ah over. But not all the judges agreed with the pair's attempt to tone down the sexiness for traditionalist Len Goodman's sake, and Kim's approach did indeed appear to be wavering between "Magic Stick" and "I Do Not Hook Up" throughout. "Taking thie raunch out of Lil' Kim is like having a margarita without tequila!" Bruno lamented.
Score: 26

Chuck Wicks: It was the samba that separated eventual champion Apolo Ohno from the pack in Julianne Hough's debut season and… it almost worked this time, too. It was definitely Chuck's most natural-looking and technically smooth performance to date. He just about looked like a dancer out there—and it was more than enough improvement for the judges. "Chuckie! I liked it a lot!" raved Len, while Carrie Ann stood up to offer an enthusiastic raise-the-roof gesture.
Score: 27
. Their best by a four-point mile.

Ty Murray, Dancing with the Stars ABC/KELSEY MCNEAL

Ty Murray: If Ty isn't just the most amiable, aw-shucks waltzing partner ever... He's not the smoothest of them all, but this rodeo cowboy just exudes likeability (not to mention he dedicated the dance to his wife). Despite suffering a bad bruise last week, this was his best in awhile, although he was a little off-kilter during a few of their lengthier sweeps across the floor. Probably overthinking things again. "This is a bigger comeback than Mickey Rourke!" exclaimed Bruno, while, playing the part of Bruno, Len told Ty and Chelsie Hightower that their waltz had "more rise and and fall than a bride's nightie."
Score: 24
. Not their very best, but a six-point improvement over last week.

Shawn Johnson: This 17-year-old is growing up before our eyes. Shawn was popping her hips to perfection in her glittery, Michael Jackson-inspired cha-cha (Mark Ballas has a thing for fancy socks this season). Their routine finally captured just the right combination of the Olympian's professional-caliber technique and her burgeoning comfort with showing skin and being sexy. "I loved it!" raved Carrie Ann, while Bruno called Shawn his "cheeky little devil."
Score: 29

Gilles Marini, Cheryl Burke, Dancing with the Stars ABC/KELSEY MCNEAL

Gilles Marini: Turns out the hip-swinging stud can waltz, too. (To make up for any lack of smolder in the dance, Gilles spent half their rehearsal footage in a bathing suit.) The movements were pretty flawless, though the air of seriousness the Frenchman put on could have been mistaken at times for hauteur, dampening down the dreamy romance somewhat. Somewhat. "So glamorous, you two," Bruno swooned at Gilles and Cheryl Burke. Len thought it "superb" overall.
Score: 27

Shawn's uninhibited sexiness, Chuck tying Gilles... So much to chatter about in the comments section. We'll bid adieu to another couple on Tuesday's results show and Tom Bergeron will explain an upcoming viewers' choice competition to select DWTS's next new pro.

Here's a rundown of the ever shrinking leaderboard:

Melissa and Tony: 29
Shawn and Mark: 29
Chuck and Julianne: 27
Gilles and Cheryl: 27
Lil' Kim and Derek: 26
Ty and Chelsie: 24
Lawrence and Edyta: 21

{alltv} Vanessa Hudgens Sounds Off On 25 Things You Don't Know About Her

We already know a few things about Vanessa Hudgens — how much we love her in the High School Musical movies, how well-dressed she always is and how adorable she is with boyfriend Zac Efron. But the star revealed 25 things about herself to SELF this month that you might not know, including tidbits on her fashion, beauty and workout habits. As far as shopping, she says her "biggest splurge was a purse from Louis Vuitton. Ashley Tisdale and I each got one in different colors when we were on tour in Mexico. We call it our friendship purse. I don't want to say how much it cost. I don't like revisiting that place." But she will admit to loving shopping online (just like us!). "I'm an online shopaholic: ShopPlanetBlue.com, Shopbop.com, IntermixOnline.com. I love that you can see everything, rather than fishing through the racks. And the surprise of getting it in the mail is like a present to yourself." And how does she keep herself looking so good in all her designer duds? "My secret to flat abs is pilates." But she also loves the challenge of being in a class at the gym, saying "I like sitting in the front row of cycling class. I feel like everybody behind me is looking forward, and that pushes me to do my best. I look at myself in the mirror and get this really ferocious, angry look on my face like I'm about to kill someone. It's crazy." As for her beauty routine, she says less is more most of the time, "Sometimes I feel prettier without makeup. You take it off and you're like, 'Oh, there I am!'" But there are exceptions to every rule. "Red lips make me feel sexy. Put on red lipstick and it brings out the vixen in you." Read more about Vanessa at SELF.com.

The design has just become available for purchase at Hayden Olivia Bridal in Charlotte, N.C., which has been chosen as one of only three U.S. boutiques — and ten shops worldwide — to carry the wedding dress. {alltv} Zac Efron on Why He's Not Starring in Footloose

He has nothing against Footloose, but Zac Efron is ready to take his career into "the unknown," he tells EW.com.

The High School Musical heartthrob decided not to take the role of Ren McCormack in the upcoming remake of the hit '80s musical – a part that launched the career of then-25-year-old Kevin Bacon – because he wants to challenge his acting chops.

"I'm sure Footloose would have been a huge challenge, but the actors that I love and the actors that work really hard in this industry are always shaking things up, trying new genres, acquiring new skill sets," says Efron, who is in Las Vegas to receive the Showest Breakthrough Performer of the Year award. "That's what's always going to appeal to me: the unknown."

Venturing into that unknown, Efron is trading in his dancing shoes for a shovel in a role as a young gravedigger in The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud, being directed by Burr Steers at Universal.

Efron will play a caretaker at a cemetery where his brother has recently been buried. He has meetings with his deceased little bro – and begins a romance with a woman who is believed to be missing in a sailing accident.

So who should take on the role of Ren in Footloose?

{alltv} 'Dr. Phil' guests in shoplifting probe

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - A couple who went on national television to brag about making $100,000 shoplifting and selling their loot on eBay is under investigation by U.S. federal agents.

Matthew and Laura Eaton of San Marcos appeared on the "Dr. Phil" show last fall to share their story, aided by a video of their three small children accompanying them on a three-day shoplifting binge.

Last week the Secret Service and other members of the multi-agency San Diego Regional Fraud Task Force searched their home and seized toys, a car and other belongings.

The Eatons have not been arrested or charged. The couple hired a lawyer with the United Defense Group in Los Angeles to represent them, but the firm said Thursday they would not comment on the case.

Dave Hillen, a detective at the San Diego County sheriff's office, said he investigated the Eatons for shoplifting before their television appearance.

Last August he received a complaint from a Target store in Vista that the couple had stolen a Lego kit and confronted them at their home. Hillen said he noticed a pile of unopened toys in the family's garage, but the Eatons claimed they sold the toys online.

He said the couple admitted stealing the Legos and he filed a misdemeanour case with the district attorney's office.

They appeared on the show several months later, telling Dr. Phil McGraw that they made $3,500 in one week from selling stolen toys. Matthew Eaton called the thefts "easy money."

{alltv} Costello turns interview tables

The interviewee has become the interviewer.

So did legendary singer, musician and songwriter Elvis Costello absorb anything from the people who have interviewed him through the years, in terms of how to get it right and how to get it wrong?

"If I give that away, then you ALL will be able to get it right," Costello said, prompting laughter.

Well, anything Costello has learned about interviewing celebrities will be on display tonight, when Spectacle: Elvis Costello With ... makes its Canadian debut on CTV.

"It's not a pass and fail thing," Costello said of his interviewing skills. "I've been out of school a long time now. I'm not trying to pass or fail anything. I think it's kind of ludicrous to give 'out of 10' ratings. It's very juvenile.

"The conversation is edited from a longer conversation, so I'm hoping it will be entertaining and may reveal something we didn't know about the subject, and perhaps about myself in the nature of the questions I ask."

Costello's guest on opening night is Elton John, who also happens to be Spectacle's executive producer. The series, developed in Canada, was the brainchild of Winnipeg music journalist Stephen Warden.

As the 13-part talk/music series -- which was filmed in New York -- progresses, other guests will include Lou Reed, the Police, Tony Bennett, Kris Kristofferson, Herbie Hancock, Smokey Robinson, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Zooey Deschanel, Jakob Dylan, Costello's wife Diana Krall and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, among others.

Costello ventured into hosting in 2003, when he was one of a series of guest-hosts who filled in on The Late Show with David Letterman, when Letterman was sidelined with a case of shingles. Warden saw Costello's performance and that obviously played a role as Spectacle was being developed.

Costello was asked if, after his Late Show experience, he ever considered taking a job as a traditional talk-show host. Was the musical element in Spectacle at Costello's insistence?

"I wasn't about to start laying down conditions," Costello said. "This is the first thing I've done where it has been more than just a guest shot.

"I don't know why we would do (a non-musical show), really, unless I was interviewing an author who just never mentioned music, do you know what I mean? But why would you choose that person?"

As a musician himself, Costello has an innate ability to talk to other musicians, and to get them to try things they might not be comfortable trying with Jay Leno or Jimmy Fallon.

"Elton (John) made the suggestion that he would go to the piano and actually physically illustrate," Costello said. "You have to have a degree of confidence as a writer to not think that somebody, not just with a lawsuit, is going to diminish you in some way if you go, 'I actually got the idea for this type of voicing from another artist.' I thought it was very generous of Elton to do that, particularly.

"And Lou (Reed) was illustrating the correct way to play Sweet Jane. It's a handful of chords but people still get it wrong."

Costello's cleverness has been evident for decades in the wordplay of his songs, but Spectacle provides him with a unique venue to connect with other famous people. And we get to eavesdrop on the conversation.

In its simplicity, Spectacle is both old-school and ground-breaking at the same time.

So if Elvis Costello could change one thing about the modern music industry, what would it be?

"I never, ever think about it," he said. "I try never to utter the words music and industry -- oh, I just did it, sorry -- together."

And why would that be?

"Because I abhor blasphemy."

Canada both first and last for Costello series

If it seems as if Spectacle: Elvis Costello With ... has been a "coming attraction" for a long time, well, you're right.

Spectacle, which makes its Canadian debut tonight on CTV, was the brainchild of Winnipeg music journalist Stephen Warden and was developed in Canada.

But the series already has aired both in the United States (on the Sundance Channel) and in England (on Channel 4).

To the knee-jerk Canadian patriot inside all of us, that's a tad irritating.

For CTV's part, it simply was a programming decision, and we accept that.

First of all, CTV doesn't have a heck of a lot of holes in its primetime sked.

The Sundance Channel -- which is a cable channel in the U.S. -- began running Spectacle late last year, and CTV didn't want to just "waste" the series in December, when TV audiences always dip because of the Christmas holiday rush.

So CTV reasoned that this was the best time to air Spectacle, because it found a reasonable primetime spot for it and it could be promoted heavily, which has been occurring.

Both Costello and his wife Diana Krall were front-and-centre at the Juno Awards in Vancouver (which aired on CTV) last weekend, for example.

So yes, we understand. CTV wants to give Spectacle the best chance to succeed. We don't blame CTV.

But still, we now live in a world where, if something has aired anywhere, you usually can find it easily enough on the Internet.

There's just something in us that would have loved to see such a unique series, which was conceived and developed in Canada, airing in Canada first -- or, at least, not last.

Call us irrationally patriotic, but feelings are feelings, eh?

{alltv} 'Jon & Kate Plus 8' fifth season confirmed, but is it wise?

Yes, "Jon & Kate Plus 8" fans, the show is indeed returning for a fifth season despite all the rumors of impending divorce or general marital discord going on between Jon and Kate Gosselin.

So, uh, that's good news. Maybe.

The announcement was made at Discovery Network's TLC upfront Thursday, April 2, and the Gosselins, minus the two sets of unruly multiples, were on hand to tell viewers to "expect the unexpected" and that a trip is in their future. And then they crossed the fortune teller's palm with silver for such generic predictions.

We're not so sure that a fifth season is the best idea. While Jon hasn't quite admitted to partying and getting drunk with co-eds, he did mention in the fourth season finale that he didn't like his fame preceding him (read: he didn't like the photos hitting the Internet).

Whether or not these shenanigans actually caused trouble in Gosselin paradise is up for debate.

Perhaps the show has outlasted its welcome, Jon wants anonymity and the kids would benefit from a life away from the cameras ... but if there were no more "Jon & Kate Plus 8," then there would be no more "Jon & Kate" video clip love from "The Soup." A pity.

{alltv} Know your 2009 pilots: FOX edition -- with guest star Earl Hickey

FOX has one of the more stable drama slates on TV, with a certified hit in "House," solid veterans like "24" and "Bones" and a pair of first-year shows, "Fringe" and "Lie to Me," that have performed pretty well. Throw in "American Idol" and the various output of Gordon Ramsay and you've got the makings of a pretty decent network lineup.

What it doesn't have on the air at the moment is a live-action comedy. The Sunday animation lineup still chugs along, but after the failure of "Do Not Disturb" in the fall, FOX has disappeared "'Til Death" from its schedule (although it has also somewhat inexplicably renewed the show). That leaves a total of zero half-hour comedies on the network.

So for the third installment of these Know Your Pilots posts (and don't forget the gallery of pilot season's familiar faces), I'm going to focus mostly on what the network is trying to do with its comedy development.

FOX Entertainment president Kevin Reilly has said he doesn't want to put comedies on the schedule just to have them there; instead he's looking for "a show that can either fire up a time period and we can spend a lot of money marketing it or ... a show that will be compatible behind 'Idol'" or that works with the animation block.

One intriguing possibility not from the pilot roster is "My Name Is Earl." Deadline Hollywood Daily reported Wednesday that FOX might be interested in the show, which is produced by FOX sibling 20th Century Fox TV has seen its ratings on NBC stumble, if the Peacock decides not to bring it back for a fifth season.

Whether "Earl" has enough juice left in it to help reverse FOX's comedy fortunes is an open question. Same goes for the projects below (one note: the space-set show "Boldly Going Nowhere" isn't on the the list because it's been put back into the development grinder. If it comes back around, it probably wouldn't be until at least early 2010).

"AbFab"

What it is: A remake of the classic Britcom "Absolutely Fabulous"

Why we're interested: Stars Kathryn Hahn and Kristen Johnston are intriguing choices to play Eddie and Patsy, but will this one succeed where several other remake attempts have failed?

"Brothers"

What it is: The story of an ex-pro football player (ex-pro football player Michael Strahan) who reconnects with his wheelchair-bound brother (Darryl "Chill" Mitchell).

Why we're interested: Strahan did an amusing guest spot on "Chuck" this season, but could he carry a show?

"Cop House"

What it is: Ensemble show about a group of troubled police officers who live in a halfway house before being allowed back on the job.

Why we're interested: Mostly for the cast, which includes Tony Hale, Rachael Harris, Scott Caan and Nora Zehetner.

 "The Station"

What it is: The story of the CIA office in a small South American nation and its efforts to install a new dictator.

Why we're interested: Ben Stiller is directing it, and it's the kind of weird premise that could be either brilliant or a train wreck.

"Sons of Tucson"

What it is: Three rich kids hire a dude to pose as their father while their real dad is in prison.

Why we're interested: The dude in question is "Reaper's" Tyler Labine, and "Malcolm in the Middle"/"Wonderfalls" veteran Todd Holland is directing it.

"Two Dollar Beer"

What it is: A recession-themed comedy about young people living in Detroit.

Why we're interested: Because we're curious to see whether material like this can be funny.

So those are all the comedies. Here are a couple of dramas that sound like fun:

"Human Target"

What it is: Based on the DC/Vertigo comic book about a security expert who takes on the identities of his clients to draw out potential threats.

Why we're interested: Because of the cast: Mark Valley in the title role, supported by Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley.

"Masterwork"

What it is: A globe-hopping thriller about the search for stolen works of art.

Why we're interested: "Prison Break" creator Paul Scheuring is writing it, and it's something we haven't seen too much of on the small screen.

{alltv} Miley, JoBros Team Up on "Disney's Version of 'We Are the World'"

The couple that stays together breaks up together, is sometimes still contractually obligated to play together.

E! News has learned that Miley Cyrus is set to reteam with her ex-flame (and Mouse House coworker) Nick Jonas as part of an all-star recording session for a song called "Pass It On"—a track an inside source calls "Disney's version of 'We Are the World.' It's about kindness and passing it on."

Fellow Jonases Joe and Kevin are also among those on board for the track, which is being recorded later this week. The tune was penned by Adam Anders and Nikki Hassman, who wrote Cyrus' Hannah Montana hit "Hoedown Throwdown."

Cyrus, the JoBros and other Disney musicmakers will shoot the "Pass It On" video on Saturday.

As for those despite tabloid reports of a simmering feud between Miley and Nick?

"We don't hate each other," Cyrus told E! News' Ryan Seacrest today. "We really love each other. He's really cool and I'm happy we've been able to stay friends.

"Everyone thinks that me and the Jonas Brothers have this big feud going on and me and Nick are really close friends now. We talk all the time and he's one of my best friends."

{alltv} Zac Efron Makes a Funny With His Famous Friends

Just call it Zac Efron & Friends.

Zac was in director-producer Adam Shankman's backyard the other day in Los Angeles, shooting a video for FunnyorDie.com.

Who did the guys enlist to help them out?

Shankman, a producer of the Efron's 17 Again and director of Hairspray, codirected the bit that features Vanessa Hudgens, Queen Latifah, Carmen Electra, Lance Bass, Brody Jenner, Joel Madden, Nicole Richie and former MADtv crackup Nicole Sullivan.

Details are under wraps, but I've been told the video is tied to 17 Again. Sullivan, who is pregnant in real-life, plays a "white trash girl" and a Rolls Royce that Latifah drives in the video actually belongs to Shankman, according to a source.

While official photos from the shoot won't be released for a day or two (video should post sometime next week), you can see shirtless shots of Zac from the shoot over at my blogging pal Just Jared.

Thanks, J.J.!

{alltv} Michelle Obama Invited as 30 Rock Guest Star

So how does Alec Baldwin's 30 Rock character Jack Donaghy make amends for his admittedly misguided job last season with the Bush administration?

"I would like Michelle Obama on 30 Rock," Baldwin told Hollyscoop.com at the premiere of Lymelife on Wednesday at the 14th Annual Gen Art Film Festival in New York.

Baldwin, who turns 51 on Friday, says he's more interested in getting the First Lady on the show than her husband because, "the President is on TV every day, all day. So we want to get something different."

Such a VIP appearance would not be uncharacteristic for the Emmy-winning NBC sitcom, which has attracted mega celeb guests like Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston and Jerry Seinfeld, and political figures including Al Gore, James Carville and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

When asked what role Michelle Obama would play, Baldwin teased: "I think my character falls in love with Michelle Obama, of course." He jokingly added, "You know, if it doesn't work out with Barack ..."

Last season, Baldwin's Donaghy briefly worked in a dead-end position as director of Homeland Security Crisis And Weather Management, under a character played by Matthew Broderick. Donaghy eventually got himself fired by declaring that he'd funded a "gay bomb" that makes enemy soldiers want to have sex with each other.

{alltv} Breaking Bad Gets a Good Break: Renewal

Looks like viewers will get to see more of Walter White's transition from meek chemistry teacher to meth kingpin: Breaking Bad has been renewed for a third season.

The Peabody Award-winning AMC drama, which earned lead actor Bryan Cranston an Emmy for best actor, is four episodes into its second season. Production is expected to begin later this year on the third season, slated to air in 2010.

In an interview with TVGuide.com, Cranston said creator Vince Gilligan plans to tell the story of White's complete transformation from timid family man to ruthless drug dealer. Viewers have already seen Walt cook meth and kill, and his attempts to provide for his family before he succumbs to cancer will only take him to darker territory.

Are you excited the Breaking Bad saga will continue?

{alltv} 'Rescue Me' returns for 5th season

NEW YORK - "Rescue Me" has been playing with fire since the start.

This FX drama has dared to picture New York City firefighters as loutish, madcap and self-destructive - not just heroic. At its core is Denis Leary, whose titles on the show include co-creator, co-executive producer and writer, plus his starring role as Tommy Gavin, a flawed champion among New York's Bravest.

After much too long, "Rescue Me" returns for its fifth season Tuesday, kicking off an extra-long run of 22 episodes. (In Canada, the season starts April 19 on Showcase.)

As always, it's a volatile mix of action, heart, raciness and dark humour.

While the series has a raw topicality, it's rooted in the ruins of 9/11. Among Tommy's fellow firefighters who lost their lives that day, a cousin (and Tommy's best friend) died at ground zero, later haunting him in visions.

This season, Tommy's wounds are reopened (and his hackles raised) when a sexy French journalist arrives at the firehouse, researching the tragedy for a coffee table book to mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorists attacks.

Guest stars have always sparked "Rescue Me," and this season is no different. First up: Michael J. Fox in a multi-episode arc gets under Tommy's skin as the obnoxious guy dating Tommy's estranged wife.

But there are also fires to put out, of course. This explains why production crew, equipment and firefighters (some real, some make-believe) have descended on a block of Manhattan's West 121st Street on a frigid January night.

This sequence, from an episode to air late this season, will show the men of 62 Truck responding to a call at a blazing brownstone. It will also introduce a character played by guest star Maura Tierney, who pulls up in a cab to find her home on fire, then defies Tommy's efforts to bar her entry with a swift kick to his privates. (Can romance be far behind?)

Tierney isn't around. Her scenes were shot the night before. The entire location shoot will span three nights.

"We haven't even gone in the building yet," says Leary, clomping around in his full firefighting outfit, "and we've been here half the evening already."

The block is bathed by lights mounted high on a cherry-picker, dousing the brownstone's exterior. The street is barricaded so the fire engine (this one is owned by the show) can rush to its destination unimpeded. Meanwhile, a "real," on-duty NYFD truck is parked out of sight around the corner. Every step of this fire scene has been authorized and is now being supervised by the department.

"Even though it's fake fires that we're creating, it's real flame and smoke, with safety issues," Leary notes.

The guy in charge of playing with fire is the show's special effects co-ordinator, Conrad ("Connie") Brink.

"My responsibility is to make sure this house doesn't burn down," he says. "My second responsibility is to make fire."

With 48 years in the business, Brink (with, more recently, sons Jeff and Conrad Jr.) has had a hand in many of New York's best cinematic pyrotechnics. Listing a few credits, Brink cites the films "American Gangster" and "War of the Worlds," and the series "The Sopranos." (Don't blame the mob for all those nasty explosions; blame Brink.)

As Brink oversees from the icy sidewalk outside the brownstone, smoke from a smoke machine is issuing from a window, and raging flames (which are actually a row of propane-fuelled jets) erupt from a couple of other windows. In postproduction, the blaze will be further enhanced digitally, then copied-and-pasted into the brownstone's unignited windows.

"This is a simple job," Brink says. "We've done warehouses with 30 windows all burning at the same time."

You might think that when "Rescue Me" needs to make a dwelling look like it's on fire, a vacant structure would be chosen out of simple convenience. Not in this case, as Brink demonstrates with a brief tour inside. This lovely brownstone is someone's home, with the furniture and other possessions carefully moved aside and covered, to free up space for equipment, technicians and cables snaking everywhere.

"Everything in here is beautiful," says Brink, admiring the owner's renovation efforts. "He's restored all the woodwork. And how's that for a bathroom!"

Later, after the exterior shots are done, Tommy Gavin and his fellow firefighters will be filmed bursting in from the street to face the smoke-clogged front hall. But the rest of the action inside the apartment will be shot a few days later under more controlled conditions: on a set in a studio across town.

By then, the only evidence of the made-to-order inferno on West 121st Street will exist on film.

"When we're finished," says Brink, "we'll pull all our stuff out, everything will be cleaned up, the paper will be taken off the walls and floors, and the guy can have his place back."

But that seems far away as the shoot drags on.

"It's starting to get old now," Leary declares. "After 10, 11, midnight, it gets REALLY old. You really want to go home and go to sleep."

{alltv} Mike Holmes helps out in New Orleans

Last June, Mike Holmes headed to New Orleans to face the toughest assignment of his professional life: in 10 weeks, make it right for one family whose home was destroyed three years earlier by hurricane Katrina.

At the same time, the Halton Hills, Ont.-native had to set a construction standard for hundreds of hurricane-resistant, energy-efficient homes to follow.

The result is "Holmes in New Orleans," a two-part special which begins Tuesday, April 7, at 9 p.m. ET on Global and concludes the following night. An expanded, six-part version begins April 9 on HGTV.

The 45-year-old contractor became famous for ripping apart other people's renovation mistakes on his long-running HGTV series "Holmes on Homes." But this was a challenge on a whole other level: trying to undo the mistakes of several layers of government administration in what has been called America's worst natural disaster - and doing it in the sweltering heat of a New Orleans summer.

He did have some high-level support, however, from a couple of movie stars: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Pitt had launched his own "make it right" campaign in New Orleans, starting a foundation under that name. When Holmes's people heard that the boss's trademarked expression had been used, they made some inquiries and got on board with the project, flying Holmes and his crew down to build the first energy-efficient home in the still devastated Lower 9th Ward region.

Holmes's production crew was able to grab Pitt for a little face time, and the Oscar-nominated actor speaks admiringly of Holmes and his efforts. The respect was mutual.

"My first impulse was, these are big-shot movie stars - I don't know how to meet these people," Holmes says of their first encounter. "And I was humbled because they were very nice people. Very down to earth, it gave me a whole new respect for them."

Holmes and his all-Canadian construction crew, which included his son Mike Jr. and daughters Amanda and Sherry, put in killer days and nights in an effort to reach their Aug. 29 deadline.

The neighbourhood is one metre below sea level, so three dozen giant poles had to be sunk in the unstable earth to a depth of 8 1/2 metres just to establish a firm foundation.

The tough challenges, including putting up what Holmes calls "the hardest roof I ever worked on," took its toll on his crew. Several quit or took time-outs, including his children.

"My son Mike had heat stroke. I sent him back to the hotel for two days to recoup. There are all kinds of things that happened with my people that you'll see on the show. It's real and we deal with it."

Holmes says he never fakes storylines to ramp up the drama.

"In truth, all you have to do is follow the puck and it will unfold in front of you, and that's what we do."

He's a bit suspicious of shows like "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," where a crew moves in and transforms a shack into a dream house in one week. While he admires the basic desire to help people in need, he thinks that show has lost direction.

"They started to turn it into more of a circus," he says. He feels they "push too much for the tears, especially all the workers crying like babes on the show. It doesn't work for me."

Architects from around the world had designed the low-cost, energy-efficient homes that made up the New Orleans project. Holmes was able to choose the simple, straightforward design he liked best.

He says he stuck pretty much to the plans, which called for the home to withstand a category 5 storm.

He marvels at the will of the locals in the wake of the Katrina disaster. "No matter what, they want to come home."

That was certainly true of Gloria Guy, a 68-year-old who needed a safe home for the grandchildren she raises on her own. Holmes says handing her the key at the end of the project made all the hard work worthwhile.

"That's the one moment that reminds you of why we do what we do over those 10 weeks," he says. "It's a wonderful feeling we never forget."

{alltv} Spelling slams anorexic rumours

Actress Tori Spelling has blasted rumours she's suffering from anorexia after recent photographs of the star prompted fears for her superslim frame.

The 35-year-old mother-of-two has sparked speculation she is battling weight issues, with one U.S. tabloid claiming she now weighs just 98 pounds.

A source alleged Spelling's weight had plummeted as a result of the stress caused by her estranged mother Candy's memoir Stories from Candyland, in which she details the pair's strained relationship.

The insider told Star magazine, "It's not good. Tori's so stressed over her mum's new book, she has no appetite but is still exercising every day. Her friends are all worried that she may be anorexic. She's now down to a size zero."

But the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star has hit back at the claims.

Her representative tells news show Access Hollywood, "She does not weigh 98 pounds."

Spelling herself recently laughed off gossip about her personal life and her troubled relationship with her mother, insisting, "You have a sense of humour about it because, you know, it doesn't stop. One week everything is good, next week everything is bad."

{alltv} 'ER' finale somewhat anticlimactic

The series finale of ER is tonight? Didn't that already happen three weeks ago?

Everything about this last season of ER, which airs on CTV and NBC, seemed to be gearing up to George Clooney's possible return. Would Clooney come back? Or would he resist?

Well, as we all know by now, Clooney already came back to reprise the role of Dr. Doug Ross three weeks ago. So we must admit, the ER finale tonight has something of an anti-climactic feel to it.

Even if Clooney jumps out of a closet again, it's kinda "been there, done that," ya know? The initial episode order for ER this season had the series ending three weeks ago, but cupboard-is-bare NBC eventually asked for three more weeks.

Last week ER was NBC's most watched show with 10.4 million American viewers, but that ranked it only 20th in the weekly primetime ratings. And it's less than a third of what ER averaged in its second season.

ER has been around for 15 seasons, having debuted all the way back in 1994. It stopped being a front-burner show for a lot of viewers seven or eight years ago, but anything that can hang around for a decade and a half in this TV landscape should be applauded.

The finale tonight is a two-hour extravaganza. Prior to that, a one-hour retrospective will air on NBC (which is ER's network of origin in the United States) but not on CTV.

In the finale episode, titled And in the End, Part 1 & 2, Dr. Tony Gates (John Stamos) works on a teen brought in with alcohol poisoning after playing a drinking game with friends; Dr. John Carter (Noah Wyle) opens a new medical facility for the underprivileged in Chicago and some old friends from County General stop by to show their support; Nurse Sam Taggart (Linda Cardellini) gets a special gift for her birthday; and Dr. Carter works with an intern to save a mother who is in labour with twins.

Scheduled guest-stars include Alexis Bledel and Ernest Borgnine, while "guest appearances from ER alumni" are being teased, too.

Once you've had Clooney, though, you can never go back.

That came out awkwardly, but you know what we mean.

{alltv} Barker, Moakler split again

On/off couple Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler have split again just a month after hinting they were ready to re-marry.

The couple ended its two-year marriage in 2006, but became close again after the Blink-182 drummer almost died in a plane crash in South Carolina last September.

The rocker and his ex admit the crash was the inspiration behind their decision to become man and wife once again.

Former beauty queen Moakler told Us Weekly magazine, "We would like to renew our vows and have another wedding."

But the couple never got close to exchanging vows again - their representatives have confirmed they've split.

Reports suggest their latest break-up came after "a nasty fight" broke out at Barker's house on Tuesday night, which ended with a police intervention.

A source tells UsMagazine.com, "Shanna started freaking out and acting irrational. Travis confronted Shanna about her having an affair with (actor) Gerard Butler, while he was in the hospital recovering (from the plane crash).

"He just wants to focus on his music and his children right now. He is done with her drama."

And Barker's rep confirms, "After surviving the plane crash, his driving force in life is the love he has for his kids. He is tired of all other drama and is ready to move on."

And a spokesman for Moakler adds, "They did break up but Shanna never cheated on Travis while he was in the hospital. Furthermore, Shanna is tired of playing out their personal relationship in the press."

The couple has two kids together, Landon Asher and Alabama Luella, and Moakler has a daughter, Atiana Cecilia, with ex-husband Oscar de la Hoya.

{alltv} Bones Star Talks of Half-Eaten Lovers and Mangled Schedules

You could say that Camille's old flame isn't half the man he used to be. Literally. That grim image sets the stage for this week's (non-preempted!) episode of Fox's Bones, airing Thursday at 8 pm/ET. Tamara Taylor, who plays Cam, gave us a peek (through the fingers) at what's to come. Plus: What's the deal with this season's far-out pre-finale episode?

TVGuide.com: Poor Bones can't catch a break with the scheduling, can it?
Taylor: You know, they promised that it's going to be consistent for the next 11 weeks. Hopefully that will stand.

TVGuide.com: There's now talk that because of recent presidential preemptions, some episodes might get held for the fall, and aired out of sequence.
Taylor: Oh, I wonder! You probably know more than I do. I heard they might double them up.... There are a lot of theories. [Sources confirm for TVGuide.com that Bones will run new episodes on both Wednesday and Thursday during the weeks of April 13 and April 20.]

TVGuide.com: This Thursday we get a Cam-centric story. Now let's look at the first half of the episode's teaser: "The half-eaten body of Cam's former fiancé...." Listen, I know you've been desperately rallying for a love interest....
Taylor: That's not quite how I expected it to turn out, no.

TVGuide.com: The rest of the teaser: "... is found in the tiger cage at the zoo." Um, ew.
Taylor: It is kind of nasty.

TVGuide.com: Being a former cop, does Cam get to work the case?
Taylor: We get called in after the body is found during a fundraiser at the zoo. When we get the body back to the Jeffersonian, we do our normal prelim examination until Angela comes up and says, "I've ID'd him. And this is his name." Cam is beyond caught off guard, and insists that she be a part of the investigation. It was really interesting how they wrote it because we don't see Cam break very often. This time, throughout the whole episode she tries to hold it together, but it is not easy.

TVGuide.com: How does guest star Chad Lowe fit into it all?
Taylor: Oh my goodness.... David Boreanaz is the one to ask, because he got a good chuckle over it. [Lowe's character] ends up being ... oh goodness ... one of the people questioned. That's all I can say. But we love Chad!

TVGuide.com: What else might we learn about Cam in this episode?
Taylor: We never flushed out what Booth and Cam's [past romantic] relationship was about, so a lot of fans assumed that it was a big relationship for Cam. But what we find out is that this [deceased guy] was actually the love of her life.

TVGuide.com: Tell me about this very "different" episode Bones has planned for before the season finale. We've got Patricia Belcher and Ryan O'Neal returning (as Caroline Julian and Bones' father), Eric Millegan is back as Zack, and we've got... "Stewie" from Family Guy. Um, have you seen the script for this?
Taylor: No one has seen the script yet, they've kept it really quiet. I know that it's... how do I say this without blowing anything... hmmm ... it's a sort of "altered reality" episode.

TVGuide.com: Some fans are worried by the unusual hodgepodge of casting, but you're saying the show probably pulls it off?
Taylor: Not only do I think they're going to pull it off, they're going to pull it off very well.

TVGuide.com: Lastly, what is your take on Bones and Booth getting naked in bed together in the finale? Can it possibly satisfy the long-clamoring fans?
Taylor: Everybody's been waiting for it, and I sense they'll be satisfied.

TVGuide.com: It's good they're doing this, because if they hold off any longer, we get to a point where nothing could possibly placate people.
Taylor: Exactly, so I think the fans will be satisfied.

TVGuide.com: Anything you can tease about other upcoming episodes before we go?
Taylor: We've got a Norwegian Death Metal episode [airing April 16 and guest-starring Stephen Fry], which I think is one of the creepier ones we've had. It's super-creepy. And gross. Really nasty. They're upping the ante with the gore factor!
