{alltv} Wayans brothers face trial for alleged joke theft

468x60 Getting Online Shouldn't be Tough- $7.49 .com Domains at Go Daddy

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Trial alert! On July 12th, the best comedy in Los Angeles will not be heard at the Improv, but rather a federal court as the Wayans brothers face down a former assistant who charges that they ripped off jokes for their book, "You Know You're a Golddigger When..."

Jared Edwards worked for the comedy family for a decade and wrote jokes about women who prey upon wealthy men. He claims he pitched the idea for a book that would include material like "You know you're a golddigger when you know more about sports players' stats than an ESPN analyst."

Keenen, Shawn and Marlon Wayans rejected the idea, and then allegedly did their own version.

Joke theft allegations have been around almost as long as the first "Knock, Knock" joke, but recently, comedians have become more sensitive to laugh larceny, raising the copyright infringement card.

Because Edwards worked for the Wayans brothers, this case goes a bit above and beyond the typical plagiarism routine of a plaintiff struggling to prove the copying of expression rather than theft of unprotected ideas. Edwards is claiming that the Wayans (and St. Martin's Press) not only committed copyright infringement but also breached an implied promise to pay him for use of his ideas. Writers alleging this type of allegation have increasingly been successful in passing judicial muster.

To sum up the defense, you know you're a golddigging joke-theft plaintiff when:

* You can't be the owner of a valid copyright on jokes when the material is a work-made-for-hire.

* You can't own undivided rights on the jokes when, at most, the material was jointly authored.

* You consented to having the jokes performed by the famous Wayans clan.

* You didn't complain in time, and thus the statute of limitations has run out.

The trial is sure to provide some laughter and entertainment, but might not have the full shock value possible. That's because the parties have stipulated that certain alleged "bad acts" won't be brought up, including allegations that Edwards committed check fraud and borrowed $12,000 from Shawn, that Edwards engaged in sexual acts in Shawn's vehicle, and that Edwards threw a phone at Marlon.

Still, the trial won't be devoid of highjinks. There's been a suggestion made in court papers that the attorney for the Wayans brothers will attempt to impeach Edwards for things he said during the deposition.

Finally, even if the Wayans brothers lose, they might not have to fork over a significant amount of money. The book was hardly a best-seller, and so the judge has capped a damage award to the amount of money the Wayans got as an advance for writing the book, foreclosing any of the publisher's profits.

{alltv} Dr. Drew returns with new 'Rehab'

Wakaya 468x60

Apparently there are three certainties in life: Death, taxes and celebrities who need rehab.

Thus we have a fifth season of the reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, which makes its Canadian debut Sunday, July 3 on MuchMore. It debuted in the U.S. earlier this week.

Celebrity patients in the new season include celebrity-dad Michael Lohan, infamous Long Island Lolita Amy Fisher, former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler (he liked it so much, he's back from season two!), actress Sean Young, actress Bai Ling, former Major League Baseball pitcher Dwight Gooden, actor Jeremy Jackson, and reality-TV contestant Jessica (Sugar) Kiper.

Dr. Drew Pinsky and his team endeavour to show rehab in its true form, not as a relaxing vacation as it often is portrayed. Still, celebs seem to be busting down the doors to get in, perhaps seeing it as another form of celebrity.

{alltv} Report: 'Beckham' star in suicide bid

Wakaya 468x60

"Bend It Like Beckham" star Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been hospitalized after a suspected suicide attempt involving pills, according to the UK's Sun newspaper.

The Irish actor, who has long battled drink problems, was allegedly found slumped at his London home by paramedics on Tuesday night.

He refused treatment and police had to be called to ensure the star was taken to hospital for his own safety. Officials would not specifically say whether he had attemped to take his own life.

Meyers was later released in the early hours of Wednesday.

A spokesperson from Scotland Yard tells the publication, "Officers were called by London Ambulance Service following reports of a man refusing treatment. The man was taken to hospital."

Los Angeles based celebrity website TMZ, citing an unnamed sources close to the actor, said Meyers had been drinking heavily but was not trying to kill himself.

Meyers, who is rumoured to have recently split from his long-time girlfriend Reena Hammer, has sought help for his alcohol problems at different rehabilitation centres several times as he's struggled to remain sober since 2005.

{alltv} Donnie Wahlberg Featured on Jordan Knight's 'Stingy' Single: Listen Here

Wakaya 468x60

Amid the New Kids on the Block-Backstreet Boys extravaganza, Jordan Knight found time to re-record his single "Stingy," to include fellow New Kid Donnie Wahlberg.

Los Angeles-based DJ and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest world-premiered "Stingy" today on KIIS FM.

The single initially featured another singer on the track. He let fans aboard the 2011 NKOTB Cruise hear the single first between some yoga stretches on the lido deck of the ship.

While aboard, Knight talked about how Wahlberg's feelings were hurt because he didn't initially ask him to be on the track, especially since the original singer sounded just like him.

Wahlberg got what he wanted. And it's a good thing because everything is better when a Wahlberg is involved.

Listen to "Stingy" here.

However, some patience may be required. Earlier today, Wahlbert retweeted a fan's tweet that hinted that NKOTB fans may have jammed KIIS FM's website in hopes to get a listen.

{alltv} Blake Shelton Tells Dia Frampton "You're Family to Me"

DBS_468x60.gif

Javier Colon won The Voice Wednesday night (June 29). And Dia Frampton, Blake Shelton's protégé, came in second. But at this point, that hardly seems to matter. Because she has proven to the world she does have a voice (albeit not the voice for the show's first season), and now she also has the backing of Shelton. After Frampton's sweet duet with Miranda Lambert on "The House That Built Me," Shelton had these final words to say to Frampton: "It finally hit me, watching that. I know now why I get so emotional when I'm around you these last two weeks, Dia. Watching you stand there, singing that song with my wife, it makes sense to me. You're family to me now. I love you. I really do. I'm so proud of you. I'm so happy for you." With that kind of love and support, her loss isn't really much of a loss at all. Even Colon is behind her. Entertainment Weekly reported that after the show, he said, "I wasn't expecting to win, honestly. I, 100 percent, thought [host Carson Daly] was going to say Dia Frampton, and she is most deserving of it. She is amazing."

{alltv} Baywatch Star Jeremy Jackson Once Dated Michelle Williams!

Have Diabetes? Your supplies may be covered!

Though he was surrounded by Baywatch bombshells like Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra, Jeremy Jackson claims he only had eyes for one woman: Michelle Williams!

"She actually was a costar of mine on Baywatch," the actor, 30, said during a Tuesday interview on SiriusXM's Howard Stern Show. "She did a couple guest starring roles."

Over time, the costars eventually developed feelings for each other. "We messed around," Jackson admitted of their two-year relationship. "She was kind of like my first crush, puppy dog love."

Calling Williams his "secret rendezvous girlfriend," Jackson added that many of his first sexual experiences were with the actress, now 30. "I was learning the ropes, man," Jackson said. "If you want to make an omelet, you've got to break some eggs, right?"

{alltv} Charlie Sheen Admits to Steroid Use During Major League

Order "7lbs in 7 days" on DVD from www.foodmatters.tv today Order "7lbs in 7 days" on DVD from www.foodmatters.tv today
Charlie Sheen, Major League

It's not like Charlie Sheen has ever stayed mum about his drug use—real or fictional.

He once said: "I am on a drug, it's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body."

But now the star is talking truth about actual substances, and admitting that he took steroids to beef himself up for his role as a baseball player in 1989's Major League...

Sheen reveals in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, "Let's just say that I was enhancing my performance a little bit. It was the only time I ever did steroids."

The fired Two and a Half Men star says he took 'roids for nearly two months to improve his athletic abilities and that he kicked it after losing control of his (already unstable) temper.

"I did them for like six or eight weeks," he continues. "You can print this, I don't give a f--k. My fastball went from 79 [mph] to like 85."

His fastball may have improved, but Sheen was behaving like a mad man while on the performance enhancers. And the 'do he was sporting for the movie didn't help, either.

"I didn't like the haircut because it generated so many comments in bars. I've got enough of that already. Add that to the mix, and it's a recipe for a fistfight," the 45-year-old actor adds.

Sheen has been very open about his past drug use, once confessing he was "banging seven-gram rocks" and that he "probably took more [drugs] than anybody could survive."

{alltv} Seinfeld blamed for marriage end

CheapOair.com

A former contestant on Jerry Seinfeld's hit reality TV show The Marriage Ref has blamed the comedian and his popular series for allegedly wrecking his marriage.

Howie Kohlenberg, 47, from New York, appeared in the show's debut episode last year with his wife, Christine, in an attempt to save their relationship. But Kohlenberg is adamant their marriage crumbled following their appearance on the TV program, which saw them discuss their problems with a celebrity panel made up of Seinfeld, Eva Longoria and Tina Fey.

Kohlenberg claims producers fuelled Christine's desire for a new life without him and he is blaming executive producer and co-creator Seinfeld for the eventual break down of their relationship.

He tells the New York Post, "The headline should read, 'Jerry Seinfeld ruined my life: the danger of reality shows'... Jerry, Mr. Billionaire, I blame. And his show... The people on the show were pumping us up, saying, 'You're going to wake up and be stars. You're going to be famous and make money'... I'm not saying our marriage was perfect, but it put it in a whole new direction. It was the nail in the coffin... Everybody thinks reality shows are glamorous - you're going to get rich, and it's going to be the next Jersey Shore... They make you jump through hoops, the bottom line is they don't give a s**t. You're just another number."

But Seinfeld is showing no remorse over the allegations, telling the New York Daily News, "I love it, I love, I love it! When people get upset I enjoy it. That he's having problems, and blaming me, it's all - anything that alleviates the withering, blithering boredom of existence I'm in favour of."

{alltv} 'The Yard' like kiddie 'Sopranos'

CheapOair.com

The mere premise of The Yard made us chuckle.

Imagine The Sopranos with 11-year-old kids. That's funny right there, don't you think?

"Essentially it's The Sopranos goes to the school yard," said Paul Gross, co-executive producer of The Yard. It's a six-part Canadian comedy series that debuts with back-to-back episodes Friday, July 8 on HBO Canada.

"These kids make me howl, it's so odd," Gross continued. "It's raunchy and full of expletives, and no one in it is over 12."

The Yard is a mockumentary-style take on the inner workings of a school yard, complete with leaders and muscle and babes and geeks and rivalries. Gross provides the voice of the unseen adult documentarian.

Of note to TV watchers, the kid named Nick who "controls" the playground is played by Quintin Colantoni, son of Enrico Colantoni of CTV's Flashpoint.

"In one way or another, each episode has a sort of metaphor for the adult realm," said Gross, the veteran Canadian actor, writer and producer best known for the TV shows Due South, Slings and Arrows and Eastwick, the films Men with Brooms and Passchendaele, and a long list of theatre roles.

"The first episode is called The Economy and it's all about the equilibrium of the financial system of the school yard. It's explained to you how it works. It really is funny."

Indeed, the financial balance of the playground is maintained through a stable currency, a.k.a., a certain brand of trading cards. It's the fair distribution of these cards that keeps the peace, even allowing nerds to rise to respectability.

The threat of instability occurs when a new brand of trading cards is introduced by a gang of bullies looking to expand its power base beyond the lunch room. If no one thinks the old brand of trading cards is cool any more, will this make it impossible for Nick to maintain order?

Perhaps the most amusing moment in the debut episode of The Yard is when Nick's six-year-old little brother Adam, played by Devan Cohen, breaks down the chaos that would ensue if the old trading cards completely lost their value. Some kids purchased those cards for "futures", Adam explains, signing away desserts they didn't even have yet.

If only the sub-prime mortgage crisis could have been summed up with such clarity and simplicity.

"In another episode we have our own BP oil spill, but it's a volume manufacture of stink bombs that goes haywire," Gross said.

Besides Colantoni and Cohen, other young actors featured in The Yard include Sarah Cranmer, Keana Bastidas, Olivia Scriven, Daniel Lupetina, Cameron Mazzei, Daryn Karp, Jared Karp, Shemar Charles, John Fleming and Alex Cardillo.

"It's just a marvellous group of kids, they were all terrific," Gross said. "This was the brain child of (co-creators) Michael Mabbott and David Eddie. It's such a good idea. They've done a great job, it's very unique."

Hey, The Yard isn't a primetime cartoon, or a sitcom about young adults looking for love. So in the interests of laughter, TV could use a little "unique" right about now.
